Eligibility
Applicants seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in Electronics and Communication Engineering must meet the following academic requirements as prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC):
Candidates should hold a Master’s degree (MTech/ME/MS) in a relevant engineering discipline. Acceptable specializations include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Wireless Communication, Communication Systems, VLSI Design, Embedded Systems, Robotics & Automation, or an equivalent field.
In addition, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree (BE/BTech) in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) or allied disciplines such as Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE), Instrumentation Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Medical Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification. Candidates with a Master of Science (MSc) in Electronics may also be considered eligible.
Applicants are required to have secured a minimum of 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grades (as prescribed by UGC) in the Master’s degree. This applies to candidates who have completed a two-year/four-semester Master’s program after a three-year Bachelor’s degree. Eligibility is subject to qualifying LPUNEST and a personal interview.
Candidates who have completed a one-year/two-semester Master’s degree with at least 55% aggregate marks after a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply.
These eligibility norms ensure that applicants possess a strong academic foundation and the necessary technical background to successfully pursue advanced research in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
PhD Degree in Communication Engineering Admission Process
The Ph.D. entrance test is qualifying in nature, with minimum qualifying marks set at 50%. A relaxation to 45% is provided for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/Differently Abled/Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other eligible categories. The entrance test syllabus comprises 50% Research Methodology and 50% subject-specific content.
Candidates qualifying the entrance test will be called for an Interview/Viva-Voce conducted by the University. The final selection will be based on a weighted score of 70% from the entrance test and 30% from the interview/viva-voce. For candidates qualified through GATE/NET/JRF/SET/GPAT/CEED, selection will be based solely on the interview/viva-voce.
Candidates recommended for admission will be notified via email and offered provisional admission to the Ph.D. program.
The eligibility of candidates is provisional and subject to verification of academic qualifications, eligibility conditions, and reservation documents (if applicable).
The University reserves the right to cancel Ph.D. admission in cases of misconduct, unsatisfactory academic progress, absence in two consecutive progress seminars, failure in Ph.D.-related examinations, submission of false documents, ineligibility, or involvement in plagiarism in publications or thesis work.
Provisional eligibility or appearance in the selection process does not guarantee admission to the Ph.D. program.
Candidates joining the Ph.D. program on a full-time basis will be eligible for a stipend as per MITWPU norms.
Final confirmation of Ph.D. admission is subject to successful completion of coursework with a minimum of 55% marks, in accordance with UGC norms. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. program is three years (including coursework), and the maximum duration is six years from the date of admission.
An additional extension of up to two years may be granted through re-registration; however, the total duration must not exceed eight years from the date of admission.
Female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (with more than 40% disability) may be granted an additional relaxation of two years, with the total duration not exceeding ten years.
Female Ph.D. scholars may be granted Maternity Leave or Child Care Leave for a period of up to 240 days during the entire Ph.D. tenure.
